Intelligence is an inferred process that human use to explain the different degree of adaptive success in people’s behavior. Intelligence has been defined in many different ways including as one’s capacity for logic, understanding, self-awareness, learning, emotional knowledge, reasoning, planning, creativity, and problem solving. It can be more generally described as the ability to perceive or infer information, and to retain it as knowledge to be applied towards adaptive behaviors within an environment or context . Weschler (1944) states that “intelligence is the aggregate or global capacity of the individual to act purposefully, to think rationally and to deal effectively with his environment.” Intelligence is the ability to adjust in any of the environment situation, to gain the self-determined meaningful goals resulting in the maximum satisfactions in the life. Social intelligence, practical intelligence, spiritual intelligence, and emotional intelligence are the types of intelligence. Emotional intelligence is one the important types of intelligence where emotional intelligence is a term created by two researchers Peter Salavoy and John Mayer and popularized by Daniel Goleman in his book named “Emotional Intelligence” in 1996.

Emotional Intelligence (EI), also known as Emotional quotient (EQ) and Emotional Intelligence Quotient (EIQ), is the capability of individual to recognize their  own emotions and those of others, discern between different feelings and label them appropriately, use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior, and manage and /or adjust emotions to apart from environments or achieve one’s goal. Emotional Intelligence impacts many different aspects of our daily life, such as the way we behave that the way we interact with others. If we have high emotional intelligence we are able to recognize our own emotional state of others and engage with people in a way that draws them to us. We can use this understanding of emotions to relate better to other people from their relationships, achieve great success at work, and lead a more fulfilling life. Emotional intelligence differs from intellectual ability because it is a learned not acquired which can take place at any time in life. There is a difference between learning about emotional intelligence and applying that knowledge to one’s life.

Emotional Intelligence consists of four key attributes:

  1. Self-awareness – we recognize our own emotions and how they affect our thoughts and behavior, know our strengths and weakness, and self-confidence.
  2. Self-management – we are able to control impulsive feelings and behaviors, manage our emotions in healthy ways, take initiative, follow through on commitments, and adapt to changing circumstances.
  3. Social awareness – We can understand the emotions, needs, and concerns of other people, pick up on emotional cues, feel comfortable socially, and recognize the power dynamics in a group organization.
  4. Relationship management – we know how to develop and maintain good relationships, communicate clearly, inspire and influence others, work well in a team, and manage conflict.

In general, Intelligence is

  • The mental abilities that enable one to adapt to, or select one’s environment
  • The ability to judge, comprehend, and reason
  • The ability to understand and deal with people, objects, and symbols
  • The ability to act purposefully, think rationally, and effectively with the environment

People with high emotional intelligence are better at motivating themselves. According to Goleman’s model, those with a higher EQ have a greater ability to self-regulate, and higher levels of motivation which can reduces their tendency to procrastinate, leads to improved self-confidence, and enables them to focus on achieving long-term goals. Those with a high level of emotional intelligence typically have a happier outlook on life and more positive attitude than those with a lower EQ. They are also better at identifying and empathizing with other people’s points of view – an essential trait for preventing and resolving conflicts at work. With a better understanding, we can also understand and relate to our colleagues, which can lead to better working relationships.

Test Description:

The Roqan Emotional Intelligence Test (REIT) was developed by prof. Roquiya Zainuddin  and Arjum Ahmed (Aligarh) and published through National Psychological Corporation (Kacheri Ghat, Agra, India). It is attest that measures the emotional intelligence of an individual. The Investigator made a modest attempt to construct the test item using the following available tests on Emotional Intelligence: Self scoring Emotional Intelligence Test by Mark Daniel, with an introduction of Victor Serebriakoff (2000) Barnes and Noble Books, ISBN 0-7606-2370-2, SEQ and SQ Self-Test. (website-3) and EQ Map, Mapping your Emotional Intelligence, Norm Testing Version III.3(1996) AIT and ESSI Systems, Inc. 26 items from the first test, 18 items from second test, 10 items from the third test were selected respectively. 10 additional questions were framed by the investigator considering cultural framework and daily life activities. All these selected 64 items were framed according to multiple-choice questions with three alternate solutions. The data of these items were tabulated and discriminatory value (DV) of each item was constructed on the basis of five dimensions as given by Daniel Goleman in his book “Emotional Intelligence”. The REIT contains a consumable booklet of EIT-Za-a questionnaire set, measuring of emotional intelligence, dimensions of Emotional Intelligence, development of the scale, reliability, validity, uses of the scale, Limitations of the scale, instruction For the Administration and scoring and the 3 tables containing DV of significant items, answer key of the test and norms for the interpretation of the test.

It has a consumable booklet which is questionnaire set of 30 questions from 5 dimensions as shown in the table above. Each question contains three probable answers according to the subject’s experience on each respective questions. The instruction for scoring is given in the next table no. II below on the manual. The raw scores obtained are interpreted according to the norms of the scale given in table no III in manual. The maximum score of the complete test is 90 and the minimum score is 30. The maximum and minimum score on the dimension Self-awareness is 15 and 5, Self-regulation is 30 and 10, Motivation is 15 and 5, Empathy is 12 and 4 and Social skill is 18 and 6 respectively. According to the norms, the obtained raw score from 76 and above falls on the high range, the score 64-75 falls on the normal range and the raw score from 64 and below fall on the low range. Subject with the high scores can be considered to have high level of emotional intelligence and are likely to be high performers and vice versa.

Method and Procedure

Arrangement: There were two chairs on the position of ‘L” Shape with left hand side to the examiner. The room was bright. A table, pencil, and pen was placed next to the subject for him to use it to write on. Sufficient time was provided. Then the following Instructions were given to the subject:

 “First of all I will request for your kind co-operation. Please let me make you clear that the test result may be useful to you only when you answer statements without hesitation or any reserve. Here are the instructions about how do we complete the test in this test booklet. Please read the instructions loudly and understand it. After this, read the statements carefully tick the appropriate choice out of the three choices of the each given statement. Please don’t leave any unanswered. Your data will be kept confidential.”

Test Administration:

Before starting administration a good rapport was established with the subject and made him clear about the test. Testing instructions were introduced before the subject before starting the test work. After filling details of the demographic information, one test booklet was given to the subject and another was kept with the test taker. Before answering, administrator read the instructions loudly. After it is ascertained that the subject has understood the process of answering. While answering, subject was inspected if he was doing the work rightly. When the subject asked any questions during the process of answering, the administrator helped the subject checking the responses

After finishing the test, the subject was asked how he felt about the test. The subject was released after taking his introspective report regarding the test taken.

Introspective report

“Such a lot of the emotional situational statements. I had to think for a while in some of the situations. Anyways I answered it appropriately as far as I think. It feels me good. I had very good time while filling the report.”

The result (the state of emotional intelligence) of the subject is indicated the total of raw scores of the five dimensions presented in the table above.

The total score of the complete test obtained by the subject is 63 out of maximum score 90. It falls in the lower range according to the norms. It proves that the subject to have low level of emotional intelligence. The subject is a normal performer in the field of emotional understanding of oneself and the other’s.

The subject scored 12 in the first dimension self-awareness where maximum score is same 15. It explains the subject has a high level of knowledge of one’s internal states, references, resources and inhibition. He has high level competencies of emotional awareness, accurate self-assessment and self-confidence. He is emotionally aware, accuracy on self-assessment. He is self-confident.

According to the score 20 on the second dimension Self-regulation where the maximum is 30, we can say that the subject has control over his self normally. He also has the quality of trustworthiness. He performs his duty well and thoroughly, normally wishing right to do. Normally he is adaptable and innovation in nature.

In the third dimension motivation, the score is 7 out of 15. He has a low achievement drive and towards reaching goals having some nice initiative quality. He is optimistic too.

Empathy is the fourth dimension where he scored 10 out of the maximum 12. He is highly empathetic sensing what others feelings, understanding others and developing others in gaining satisfaction. It helps him to be self-aware and self-controlled.

In the last dimension Social Skill, he obtained 14 where the maximum is 18. He is quite qualified in the sense of handling another person’s emotions artfully. He has good communication with people, manages the conflict. He is good on building bonds, collaboration and cooperation. He loves teamwork when it comes before him.

Analysis and conclusion:

The subject’s score is 63, which falls on the low range. Anyway it is the great point of the low range. Hence the result shows him as an emotional intelligent one. He got highest point on self-awareness which can indicate him as a person who can know one’s internal states, references and inhibition. He got another highest points on Empathy which can indicate him as a person who can sense others feelings without speaking. He is normal at self-Regulation. He is very good at Motivation and Social skill. He has the quality of becoming happy, satisfied in his life.


The subject is a person having low emotional intelligence with a better quality of Self-awareness, empathy and social awareness. He is well adjusted personality.
